The wealthy are much different…

F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, “Let me tell you about the very rich.  They are different from you and me.”  To which Ernest Hemmingway retorted, “Yes, they have more money.”
Lately I have been asking myself what it takes to go from lower middle class to upper middle class like my parents did.  They taught me [...]

Deniability: Response

Seth Godin wrote yesterday about building in deniability to our projects:
How much of the time you invest in a project is spent preparing excuses, creating insurance, seeking deniability and covering your ass just in case things go poorly in the end?
At some point, that effort becomes so great you never actually ship anything, which of [...]

Day 53 – Is there ever enough time?

“I have so much to do (today) that I should spend the first three hours in prayer.” ~ Martin Luther (1546 c.e.)
Yesterday I was talking about my project and how I thought it was possible to greatly improve one’s own life in just ten percent of that individual’s given time.  Then I began talking about [...]

Buying the Best as Frugality

“Do not value money for any more nor any less than its worth; it is a good servant but a bad master.” ~Alexandre Dumas
Let me get this out there; my view of money is this: money is an analogue for things.  That is, $20 is ten pounds of ground beef.  That is, $10,000 is a [...]

“When written in Chinese the word “crisis” is composed of two characters – one represents danger and the other represents opportunity.” ~John F. Kennedy
I had a few misconceptions about my life before P90X: 1) I thought I was in shape.  I am not.  And 2) I thought I had a lot of spare time.  I [...]

“Spend time with people you want to be like.” – Matt Hambrick [me]
Seth Godin’s blog post today was entitled Expose Yourself [link].
Here is the text:
With so many options in media, interaction and venues, you now get to choose what you expose yourself to.
Expose yourself to art, and you’ll come to appreciate it and aspire to [...]

Day 37 – Finances (how I am getting out of debt).

“He looks the whole world in the face for he owes not any man.” ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I was sold a lie.  When I was in high school, my parents, my teachers, and all my mentors told me that when I left college, I would leave making a boat-load of money.  My dad once told me [...]

Day 36 – How I lost 70 pounds in less than a year

“Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
[Disclaimer] I am not a doctor. I am not your doctor.  I can only tell you how I did it.  I make no claims as to how this would work for you. [/Disclaimer]
I am writing this as [...]
